The Gut
Crowe Valley Conservation

The Gut

The Gut is located on the Crowe River where it takes a sharp bend and the waters tumble into a steep, narrow canyon. This site is a great place for a family outing as it forms part of the Crowe river conservation area. In the fall, the autumn leaves are vibrant. The rushing water of the canyon cools the air making it an ideal place to spend a hot summer day.

The Crowe Valley Conservation Authority purchased the scenic area of the Crowe River called "The Gut" and create a park for all to enjoy. Adding good road access, parking and railway tie walkway down. Railings were installed to allow visitors to safely look down at the waterfall and rapids below.

According to legend at least two men have died in the gorge.

"The Gut" offers rich variety of plant life among the rocks, flowers along the path, oaks trees. There is an assortment of mosses, ferns and other plants that thrive in the humidity create by the river spray.

Wild blueberries as well as minty taste of wintergreen can be found.

There are hiking trails in the woods, and a variety of wild life can be observed. A bird watchers paradise as many species of birds, including Ospreys, nest near the canyon.

Most spectacular is the waterfall and canyon below it. The falls only being twenty to thirty feet high, the canyon walls are one hundred feet high on either side.

Arrow heads and other Native remnants have been found here, which indicates this may have been a stopping place for natives heading along the Crowe River from Paudash Lake.

You can hike into the Canyon, which is about a mile and a half above the junction of the Crowe River and Deer River that drains Wollaston Lake.

Directions to location:

Two kilometres west of Coe Hill, take Wollaston Lake South Road, south from 620 - after 12 kilometres you will see Mission House (1864) one of the oldest houses in the area - turn left at the top of the steep hill on the other side of the single lane concrete bridge over the Crowe River - It's a further 2 kilometres to The Gut parking lot.
